Accident to the Airbus EC135 helicopter registered F-GOPG on 02/13/2018 in Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise (France)
The pilot is informed by the head of the mountain rescue station of the start of a rescue mission in the Tarentaise valley. The pilot took off from the Courchevel helipad to the intervention site. On approach to crossing the pass, in order to identify the risk elements around the landing zone, he contacted the trackers by radio who indicated the presence of the chairlift as well as a cable from the Catex. The pilot identifies them, then passes over the landing zone and begins his approach. He landed on the ski slope near the trackers and the injured skier at around 3:16 p.m.
The emergency doctor informed the pilot of the decision to evacuate the injured skier by helicopter. The pilot completed the start-up procedure at 3:20 p.m. He made sure that all passengers were buckled in, then hovered over the ski slope a few meters above the ground. It takes off following the track towards the valley. A few seconds later, while gaining level speed, the helicopter struck the cable of a Catex. Very strong vibrations appear, the pilot maintains control of the helicopter and lands urgently in the snow near a ski slope below.
The accident resulted from the pilot’s choice of an inappropriate flight path and take-off profile which led to the helicopter colliding with a Catex network cable. The impact damaged the rotor mast and generated strong vibrations which forced the pilot to have to land urgently.
The apparent “ease” of the intervention mission given the favorable meteorological conditions compared to the previous days as well as a possible state of fatigue due to a very sustained activity during the previous nine days could have contributed to a decrease in vigilance on the part of the pilot.
