FS2004/2002 McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom, 74 Squadron, RAF – early 1990’s. FOR FS2004/FS2002 ONLY This aircraft represents an RAF Phantom F-4J ‘XV423’ of 74 Squadron based at RAF Wattisham,UK. 74 Squadron were re-formed on Phantoms on October 19th 1984. The Squadron was fully operational by June 30th and together with 56 Squadron – also at Wattisham- formed part of the UK Air Defence Force intercepting Russian aircraft over British airspace. 74 Squadron were the last RAF unit left operating the Phantom when the type was retired from RAF service and scrapped in the early 1990’s. 74 Squadron were then re-formed on BAe Hawks at RAF Valley, marking the end of nearly 3 decades of Phantom service in UK air defence.
