Lucca, Tuscany, Italy v2.0
The walled medieval city of Lucca, Tuscany in its entirety. Ever in the shadow of nearby Florence, Lucca ran its own show as an independent republic for the better part of 500 years between the relinquishment of German rule in Italy in the 12th century and the Napoleonic Wars at the end of the 18th. It was one of the last surviving Italian republics in the age of the territorial prince or the signori (vaguely 15th to 19th centuries), the others being Genoa, Venice and San Marino to list a couple.
I’ve been here in person and I enjoyed it a lot more than I did nearby Pisa. Credit to Google for photogrammetry data.
