PFFH-Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals, Hawaii v1.0
PHHF-Tern Island, French Fregate Shoals,Hawaii, USA
The Airbase at Tern Island was a result of US Navy Intelligence reports of the Japanese Navy was using the sheltered waters of the island to
refuel seaplanes by uboats, and even carried out a bombing raid in 1942 on Pearl Harbour. Later that year US Navy Seabees began construction of the airbase and naval facility, expanding the small island for the 3100 X 275 feet runway. During the Pacific war PHHF served as a surveillance and refuelling station, and Emmergency strip for the warplanes in the region.
In 1946 a Tsunami sweept the island and th. US Navy closed the heavely dammaged base.
In 1952 th. US Coast Guard built a LORAN station on Tern and stationed 20 men there. A quiert life in paradise you may say, with snorkeling and sunbathing, but only once a year the station was approached by a supply vessel, and once a week, a Gruman Goose landed bringing personel and vital supply. The Island both had roles in the US Atomic program, Space & Missile Surveillance, but in 1979 was taken over by the Hawaiien & Pacific Island Wildlife Refuge, and today the old Buildings host Rangers and Researchers.
