The Greater Sage Grouse, a large bird at 2ft tall, is found in western North America in the plains, living amongst the sagebrush – their only home. Sage leaves are their staple diet and provide nesting grounds for the young ‘uns. Well known for their spectacular mating dances in springtime, these large birds gather in groups of up to 70 males. Hoping to attract a lady-friend, they strut with their chests puffed, fan their starburst tails and make a unique bubbling sound. Near threatened – due to their habitat disappearing – the greater sage grouse’s population has declined over 50% over the last 50 years. Oil and gas development, land converted for agricultural use, and climate change are the root cause of their decline.
