Carquinez Bridge, San Francisco Bay Area v1.0
Carquinez Bridge
The Carquinez Bridge is a complex of two parallel highway bridges that span the Carquinez Strait at the far northeast end of San Francisco Bay, connecting the cities of Vallejo and Crockett. The first bridge, constructed in 1958, is a steel triple-span cantilever bridge, which carries the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80; the other, opened in 2003 to replace the bridge’s original 1929 span, is a single-span suspension bridge which carries the westbound lanes of I-80 as well as a bicycle/pedestrian lane. Both bridges are just under 3500 feet in total length.
Features
– Hand-modeled recreation of the Carquinez Bridge, its toll plaza on the north end of the bridge, and the connected approach ramps on the Crockett side of the bridge.
– LOD models to reduce performance impact.
– Night lights on the bridge: road lights and suspension tower flood lights are from the native object library; marine and aircraft guidance lights, and suspension cable ‘necklace’ lights, added in Blender.
– Some light terraforming and vegetation tweaks around the bridge ends.
– This is the fourth of five bridge addons I’m working on for the Bay Area, since the default scenery still lacks proper models for everything except the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge. For those following along, the Benicia-Martinez bridges will cap this effort off.
