About the year 218 BC this city was the capital of the enormous region of Hispania and the first most important Roman capital in the West, it reached its maximum splendor in the 2nd century AD; By then, the city was called Colonia Victrix Urbs Triumphalis Tarraco and for several years it was the imperial residence of Emperor Augustus (7 BC -14 AD).
During that time and for the first time the Empire was directed from outside Rome, which is why it is also known as the Imperial Tarraco. In fact, an ideal way to get to know that part of the city’s history is to follow the Roman Tarraco route.
